Living on a Volcano tour

"the good and the bad"

We offer the exclusive volcano tour at Krafla near Lake Mývatn.

Explore craters, geothermal energy production and hear extraordinary stories of a community living on a volcano, from local geologists. We are specialised in volcanology and geothermal research.

 About the tour

The tour starts at the Krafla Power station. This power station produces electricity for the communities in the North-east Iceland. The steam originates from the Krafla volcano and erupts through 2km deep boreholes. During your visit, you will experience and learn about this power production from local specialists. The tour starts at the visitor centre at Krafla power station. From there we enter inside the power plant where you will get a view over the turbines and feel the power generated by the Krafla volcano. We will visit the Krafla geothermal laboratory and have a taste of Spririt of Mývatn, a unique local schnapps. Afterwards we head outside to visit a borehole, with our helmets, vests and a gasmeter, to get close to the source of the volcanic power. We finish with a walk in the lava fields and explore craters and other volcanic wonders.

Our recommendation

We encourage you to explore these text-book examples of geological formations:

Grjótagjá lava cave

The Grjótagjá lava cave is a part of the Krafla volcanic system. It is within a rift fracture and has formed in many volcanic episodes of the Krafla volcano. Here the North-America / Europe plate boundary is the most active in the area!
Inside the cave is a stream of warm volcanic groundwater. The temperature is about 45°C.

Hverfjall crater

The Hverfjall crater is a tuff ring crater, formed 2500 years ago, during an eruption period of Krafla volcano, named Hverfjallseldar. Eldar means fires in Icelandic. The lava exploded through the ancient lake Myvatn, resulting in this beautiful symmetrical cone.

Dimmuborgir

Dimmuborgir or "Dark cities" in English is a 2300 years old remains of a lava lake. It formed in the event called Laxárhraun eruption, in which most of the Mývatn nature was formed, including the iconic rootless cones of Lake Mývatn. Walk around  and explore beautiful lava formations, such as "The church" lava tube and more!
